Hannic reps attend the Transportation Intermediaries Association semi-annual meeting in Tucson, Ariz.
Hannic President Debra Maass relates her Conference experience: Tammy Furmanski and I just returned from TIA's 32nd Annual Convention and Trade Show in Tucson, Ariz. The attendance was the highest ever for any TIA meeting. These numbers along with the general mood of the attendees was a demonstration of the positive direction our industry is taking. CSA 2010 was one of the burning topics. While it was noted that the effective date of instituting this program has been delayed, it is important to recognize the effects this will have in our businesses and include these changes in our future plans. Security and theft were hot topics and by the attendance of these seminars, growing problems. Tammy and I split up on a few of these seminars. Tammy steered toward compliance issues while I usually find myself in the legal issues seminars. It's usually a little overwhelming with all of the lawyers in attendance but with people like Martha Payne and Eric Zalud of Benesch Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff and Dan Fulkerson of Lorance & Thompson, I've got sources to turn to for those sticky questions that no one wants to address. The networking was invaluable too. I usually get as much from talking to others as I do from the seminars. Bob Voltmann, the president and CEO of TIA has established a presence in Washington with the TIAPAC (Transportation Intermediaries Association Political Action Committee). Our industry has been bombarded with issues such as C-TPAT, Nexus taxes, fuel prices, hours of service and more. All of this as we deal with the economic issues affecting all small businesses. Bob has fought to bring our concerns to the forefront of our legislators. Hannic supports these efforts and will continue to support TIAPAC.
We here at Hannic, are committed to staying current with the topics of the day so we can avoid -- and help our customers and carriers avoid -- falling victim to the pitfalls facing our industry today. ~DM
Dispatcher Tammy Furmanski shares what she learned at the Conference: At the beginning of April, Debbie Maass and I attended the TIA's 32nd Annual Convention & Trade Show in Tucson, Ariz. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow transportation professionals in all areas of transportation and discuss the issues of the day.
One of the many sessions I attended was on Compliance Issues which was moderated by Mr. James Lee, who is the VP of Legal Affairs for Cargo Masters, LLC, a Greatwide Company. With the gentle guidance of Mr. Lee, we covered a wide variety of topics. Among the issues that were brought up were: Where to look to get information to qualify carriers, and what constitutes a qualified carrier; CSA 2010 and how this new government safety analysis will affect transportation; and, how to get proper W-9 information to minimize returned 1099s and make year-end tax time easier for all. I left there with great information and ideas to bring back to everyone at Hannic. ~TF
